What it is
ART is a soft tissue movement system designed to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Rather than pressing on a tight structure and waiting, the therapist holds a precise contact while you take the tissue through its own range of motion — tension and movement at the same time.
That combination is what makes it useful for the complaints that keep returning after ordinary massage: scar tissue and adhesions between layers that only reveal themselves when the tissue is asked to glide. Which structures get treated is decided by the postural analysis, not by the name on the booking.

What it helps
- Repetitive strain from work, training or a keyboard
- Nerve entrapment symptoms — tingling, numbness, referral down a limb
- Adhesions and scar tissue after an old injury
- Rotator cuff and shoulder mechanics
- Tendonitis at the elbow, knee, hip or ankle
What is included
- Postural analysis and consultation on a first visit
- Assessment of how the tissue glides, not just how tight it feels
- Precise contact held while you move the limb through its range
- Re-testing the same movement so the change is measurable
- Two or three things to do at home between sessions
The session
How a active release technique (art) appointment runs
Look at the whole posture
Where the symptom is and where the fault is are rarely the same place. The analysis comes first.
Find the restriction
Palpation while the tissue moves, so adhesions show up rather than hiding under general tightness.
Tension plus motion
A specific contact is held while you take the structure through its range. That is the technique.
Retest
The same movement is tested again so you feel the difference before you leave.

“Shawn is amazing. He's been helping me with my posture. A blessing from GOD. Only drawback because he's so good is lack of appointments besides the monthly one :(”
Questions
Active Release Technique (ART): the questions people ask
What does ART stand for?
Active Release Technique. It is a soft tissue movement system designed to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.
How is it different from deep tissue?
Deep tissue works through layers while you lie still. ART asks you to move the limb while a precise contact is held, so the tissue is treated as it glides. Both can be used inside the same session.
How long is the session?
Sixty minutes. Your first session also includes a postural analysis and consultation.
Will it hurt?
You will feel a specific pulling sensation as the tissue moves under the contact. It should be firm and workable, not sharp. Say so and the pressure changes.
How many sessions will I need?
That is decided by what the postural analysis shows and how the tissue responds, not by a package sold up front.
Can it be combined with other modalities?
Yes. Any number of the bodywork modalities practiced can be used in a single session.
