“When I first met him I was 210 pounds, in constant pain and walking on a cane. I have multiple disabilities but he was patient to learn about each disease and to treat me based only on my individual needs, not some cookie cutter massage that only relaxes and doesn't work towards healing. I am now 65 pounds lighter, in less pain, walking without a cane and even doing swim aerobics three times a week. He knows the anatomy and what tendon, insertion point or muscle is acting up.”

Orthopedic massage for recovery from injury and surgery
“You will leave saying WOW.”
Alignment and release techniques to aid recovery from injuries and surgery, applied with detailed anatomical knowledge.

What it is
Orthopedic massage uses alignment and release techniques to aid in recovery from injuries and surgery. With this modality, therapists put their detailed anatomical knowledge into practice: they understand the way soft tissues influence the musculoskeletal system and manipulate trigger areas to release bodily tension, decrease pain and increase mobility.
Shawn's background includes working extensively alongside physical therapists and chiropractors, which is the context this modality comes from. It fits neatly between a clinical rehabilitation program and general bodywork, and it works best when it runs alongside what your other providers are already doing.
What it helps
- Post-surgical recovery, once you have been cleared

- Compensation patterns built up while guarding an injury
- Ongoing management of an old injury that never fully settled
What is included
- Review of your diagnosis, imaging and any provider instructions you bring
- Assessment of the joint and the soft tissue that controls it
- Release work applied specifically to the structures involved
- Attention to the compensations that formed while you were guarding
- Notes you can take back to your physical therapist or chiropractor

Read the file
What was the injury or surgery, what did imaging show, and what has your provider cleared you for.
Assess the joint and its neighbours
Injured joints recruit help from above and below. Both usually need attention.
Release and align
Specific work on the structures involved, at a pressure appropriate to where you are in healing.
Coordinate
You leave with something concrete to report back to your other providers.

Questions
Orthopedic Massage: the questions people ask
Do I need clearance from my surgeon first?
Yes. If you are post-surgical, bring your clearance or your provider's instructions. Working before you are cleared is not something I will do.
Will you work directly on the surgical site?
Only when the tissue is ready and you are cleared for it. Early on, the useful work is usually around the site rather than on it.
How is this different from physical therapy?
Physical therapy rebuilds strength and function through prescribed exercise. Orthopedic massage addresses the soft tissue that is limiting that work. They complement each other and neither replaces the other.
Can you work with my chiropractor?
Gladly. Neuromuscular treatment in particular is the style most preferred by insurance companies and chiropractors, and coordinating usually means fewer visits overall.
How long before I notice a change?
Mobility often improves within a session. Durable change on an older injury is measured in weeks, not days.
What should I bring?
Any imaging report, your provider's notes, and athletic gear you can move in.
